Presentation

This week, I learned the basic information of some companies and industries.
For Nokia company, five forces of this company. The threat of new entrants is low, because the mobile phone industry is already a well established market and the threat of a new entrant is quite low, as the technology needed to rival the devices already available is quite advance if they want to differentiate from them. And any new entrants will need high investments in R&D, technology and marketing in order to compete with the established organizations. Supplier power is moderate. Nokia are in the position where they can bargain and negotiate with any mobile phone hardware maker because there is a high number of equipment suppliers that are readily available to them should their current suppliers attempt to bargain for more money with them. But Nokia have recently created an alliance with Microsoft for their software which would be considered a major coup for Nokia more than Microsoft. As a result, Microsoft will have a lot of power when negotiating a price and share because the deal is more beneficial to Nokia than Microsoft.
Buyer power is high. The mobile phone industry is a competitive market where the number of choices is very wide, resulting in the consumer having a lot of power because they can choose to go to one of Nokia’s many rivals if they feel Nokia are not good enough, which has created a very price sensitive market because consumers will always be on the lookout for the best deals. Threat of Substitution is low. Mobile phones have become an everyday necessity in peoples’ lives because of the important functions that they can do and are all available in just one handset. Competitive rivalry is high. There are a lot of companies competing with them in China, Apple, Samsung and Huawei are constantly competing in the high-end smart phone market. Xiaomi, OPPO, vivo, OnePlus brands in the middle smart phone market.
For France cheese industry, it can export to other countries, such as China, Japan, US  and so on. In France, cheese isn't as appetizer like some countries but will serve before desert. And the substitution of cheese can be jam, butter, sometimes even chocolate.
And for the Indian cinema, they compared it with other countries. For instance, India, they love happy, and they always dance and sing to express their happiness. Sometimes, they will make it very hyperbolic, a small thing they will make a long time to describe it. How about China? China has a lot of mythological stories, so they like dreaming, which also influences their movie.

Information Systems, Organizations and Strategy

Before this class, the lecture mentioned a question: " Why are you unique?". He said everyone is unique. I strongly believe it's right. But when he asked me why I was unique, I don't know how to answer. Until I sit here to write this blog, I still confused about this question. Maybe my unique point is I don't know why I'm unique. However, I won't give up finding out the answer as I think something must different from others.
I learned that 5 forces in business environment:
Competitive Rivalry. This looks at the number and strength of your competitors. How many rivals do you have? Who are they, and how does the quality of their products and services compare with yours? Where rivalry is intense, companies can attract customers with aggressive price cuts and high-impact marketing campaigns. Also, in markets with lots of rivals, your suppliers and buyers can go elsewhere if they feel that they're not getting a good deal from you. On the other hand, where competitive rivalry is minimal, and no one else is doing what you do, then you'll likely have tremendous strength and healthy profits.
Threat of New Entry. If it takes little money and effort to enter your market and compete effectively, or if you have little protection for your key technologies, then rivals can quickly enter your market and weaken your position. If you have strong and durable barriers to entry, then you can preserve a favorable position and take fair advantage of it.
Threat of Substitution. This refers to the likelihood of your customers finding a different way of doing what you do. For example, you are a member of Uber, and the customer don't ant to choose your service but choose bus, train.
Supplier Power. This is determined by how easy it is for your suppliers to increase their prices. How many potential suppliers do you have? How unique is the product or service that they provide, and how expensive would it be to switch from one supplier to another? The more you have to choose from, the easier it will be to switch to a cheaper alternative. But the fewer suppliers there are, and the more you need their help, the stronger their position and their ability to charge you more. That can impact your profit.
Buyer Power. You need to ask yourself how easy it is for buyers to drive your prices down. How many buyers are there, and how big are their orders? How much would it cost them to switch from your products and services to those of a rival? Are your buyers strong enough to dictate terms to you? When you deal with only a few savvy customers, they have more power, but your power increases if you have many customers.

What I learned in this class

Ethics are the principles of right and wrong individuals, acting as free moral agents, use to make choices to guide their behavior. Information systems raise new ethical questions for both individuals and societies because they create opportunities for intense social change.
And for the privacy in the internet age, I think it's unsafe. For instance, in China, most of us use WeChat, and it is monitored by the government. But I don't care it a long as they won't leak my personal information, such as sell my information to others for get profits and cause inconvenience. I think that I won't do something illegal, so they have no reason to pay attention to my life. In fact, most of us know  this behavior is not ethical, we still use it maybe because we don't have other choices, maybe.
For the business & production, there are 3 important elements: input, process, and output. Input, such as labor, capital idea and land & resources. Stable, formal social structure that takes resources from environment and processes them to produce outputs. A formal legal entity with internal rules and procedures, as well as a social structure.
Information systems technology can be seen as a factor of production that can be freely substituted for capital and labor. As information systems technology automates the production process, less capital and labor are required to produce a specified output.

Pay attention to every detail

This week, our class made the presentation of process which related to some small and easy things, but almost us made the same mistakes, that is, forget the details. Actually, details are very important in our daily life. We need to consider every possible situations. For instance, if someone enroll the school website, what is the process, but remember to add what should we do if we can't enroll successfully at the first time, as it may happen. If we go to the library, we need to use the library card, we need to keep our bags, sometimes, we will borrow books. So, we need to consider all of things, if somebody don't take bags, or the book isn't available, how can we continue this process.
My group topic is "Order at Starbucks a cup of Cappuccino". After the lecture's advice, we know we still have a lot of disadvantages, we should have considered more possible situations and more details. For instance, customer choose a cup size, we need to add the three cup size " small, medium and tall", at the process of customized coffee, we can add the possible situation“ add some milk or sugar". Moreover, we can put the time period of the whole process.

My Second Class

In this week, I was very excited to learn lots of knowledge. Knowledge is power, so we need to absorb more knowledge to improve ourselves.
For instance, I know what is business process after this class. The business process is the collection of activities required to produce a product or service between each division. Business process management (BPM) is a discipline in operations management in which people use various methods to discover, model, analyze, measure, improve, optimize, and automate business processes. BPM focuses on improving corporate performance by managing business processes.

A transaction process system (TPS) is an information processing system for business transactions involving the collection, modification and retrieval of all transaction data. Characteristics of a TPS include performance, reliability and consistency.
Business intelligence (BI) is a technology-driven process for analyzing data and presenting actionable information to help executives, managers and other corporate end users make informed
business decisions.
Enterprise System manages business process, information flows, reporting and data analytics. Supply chain management manages customer requirement processing, purchase order processing, sales and distribution, inventory management, goods receipt and warehouse management, supplier management/ sourcing. CRM apps manages customer data, customer interaction, marketing customer support and so on. Knowledge based system manages collection of information from internal and external sources, classification of content using grouping, search, expertise location, and views/ Dashboards.

About Me and My First Class

Hello, welcome to my blog. My name is Hu Minghui, you can call me Hana. I am a student at president university.
I like reading novels, As the saying goes: Books are the ladder of human progress. For me, reading novels is a good way to calm down. What's more, from those novels, I can watch and experience different life to improve myself.
My another hobby is travelling. In my opinion, travel is the journey to observe or explore new things, which makes me very excited.
From the class, I know Management Information Systems (MIS) is the study of people, technology, and organizations. If you enjoy technology like iPhones, iPods, and Facebook, you have what it takes to major in information systems. All you need is an interest in technology and the desire to use technology to improve people's lives. Many people think that MIS is all programming. However, programming is just a small part of our curriculum and there are many, many jobs in MIS where you do not program.
Everyone who works in business, from someone who pays the bills to the person who hires and fires, uses information systems. For example, a supermarket could use a computer database to keep track of which products sell best. And a music store could use a database to sell CDs over the Internet.
MIS is very important in our life.
